Mt. Washington Checklist
We are planning to summit Mt. Washington and return back to camp before dinner time. Mt. Washington is well known for sudden changes in weather conditions. Hiker safety is our highest priority and we will consider remaining daylight, weather, hiker health, etc before summiting. We will switch to an alternate hiking plan if necessary. Please note: to keep our hiking team safe and to maintain team unity we will be hiking together as a group.
GEAR
- Backpack/Day Pack
- WATER!!! x 2-3 liters
- Hiking Poles (optional)
- Mosquito repellant (optional)
CLOTHING
- Hiking Boots/shoes preferred, (alternative: tennis shoes with excellent traction and support – no sandals, crocs, slip on vans, etc)
- Hat and Sunglasses
- Lightweight Raingear or Jacket
- Extra layer (long sleeves and pants, warm hat, gloves – for summit)
Hiker’s tips:
- Thirsty hikers are miserable hikers. Bring plenty of water and make it accessible in multiple water bottles.
- Limit your weight to just what you will need for on the trail and summit. All other gear for the week should remain in basecamp.
- Athletic/moisture wicking layers are preferred. If possible, avoid cotton clothing as it does not retain heat when hiking in damp conditions. Non-cotton fabrics such as wool, nylon, polyester, silk all work fine.
- Although it is rare for Mt. Washington to get freezing temperatures in early August it does happen on occasion. We will not summit if weather forecasts predict dangerous weather. However, it still may be chilly on the summit. Pack extra layers. The average high temperature in August is 54 degrees.
- If you have any questions, please contact Brother Jason Walther or Mike Diehl.
